CPS Doctoral Programs

A flexible path for earning your doctorate

Northeastern University's College of Professional Studies offers three doctoral programs that provide industry-expert-led classes, real-world experiences, and flexible schedules that working professionals need.

Doctor of Education

This online program equips experienced adult learners, working professionals, and scholar-practitioners from diverse backgrounds with the skills and experience needed to transform the learning landscape.

  • Choose from five concentrations based on your interests and incorporate them into your dissertation in practice.
  • Attend two-day, in-person residencies held on campus in Boston or Seattle annually during your first and second years of the program.
  • Earn a degree that is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) and selected as the 2022-2023 Program of the Year by The Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate.
  • Take advantage of the MacFarland Scholarship offering significant financial support --up to $18,000 --for incoming students committed to working in urban educational settings.

Doctor of Law and Policy

This program is designed for experienced professionals interested in the origins, development, implementation, and analysis of legal and public policy decisions in government and related institutions.

  • Complete a doctoral thesis that examines a compelling policy change and establish yourself as an expert on a topic in which they would like to see a change or help solve a new issue, or in an area they are passionate about.
  • Attend an intensive weekend in Washington, D.C., featuring distinguished guest speakers and immersion in national policymaking during the first year.
  • Participate in an intensive weekend in The Hague featuring distinguished guest speakers and engagement with international diplomats during the second year.

Doctor of Professional Studies

In this program, you'll engage in a curriculum blending academic excellence with practical application, preparing you to solve complex problems and drive meaningful change.

  • Focus your degree by choosing a concentration in project management or organizational leadership studies.
  • Welcome professionals from a wide range of disciplines -- empowering you to research, develop, and communicate solutions to complex problems and become a co-creator of knowledge and innovation in your workplace.
  • Accelerate your personal and professional growth by focusing on critical thinking and leadership.
  • Learn to drive meaningful change and innovation in your field through research-based learning.
  • Build your understanding of theoretical concepts and their practical application.
  • Develop and execute a practice-based dissertation that showcases your ability to address tangible issues in your field.
