Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Northeastern University focuses on optimizing and solving real-world global challenges in areas such as healthcare, energy, and resilience systems.

The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering program offers the option to pursue a general mechanical engineering curriculum or to select from our four concentrations: materials science, mechanics and design, mechatronics, and thermofluids. You can also choose from coursework-only, project-based, or thesis-based options to prepare for a career in industry or a doctoral program..

Students have the opportunity to gain valuable research experience working alongside highly accomplished faculty. The College of Engineering has 17 research centers and institutes, such as the Center for High-Rate Nanomanufacturing, the Healthcare Systems Engineering Institute, the Institute for Experiential Robotics, and the Institute for the Wireless Internet of Things, as well as many faculty laboratories. Located in the heart of Boston, faculty and students benefit from collaborations with government, industry, and academic institutions.

Experience-powered learning


To prepare students for real-world engineering challenges, Northeastern combines rigorous academics with experiential learning. Through our top-ranked cooperative education (co-op) program, students can gain up to eight months of industry experience in their field of interest as part of the academic curriculum while building their resumé and developing a professional network. Some co-op partners have included Tesla, Bose, MathWorks, Wayfair, and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
