“My Roux education gave me the confidence to be innovative and creative with analytics, to take on new projects at work and in my classes, and to apply for manager roles at WEX.”—Alaina Cellini, Master of Professional Studies in Analytics ’22

Back to school for biotech: A student success story

Lindsay Watts always gravitated toward healthcare, first earning a bachelor’s degree in medical biology at the University of New England in 2019. She then launched her career as a quality control technician at Abbott, a global diagnostics leader, in Scarborough, ME.

Soon after, Watts was inspired to pursue a graduate degree that aligned with her passion for biotech. She took the leap and enrolled in the Roux’s part-time MS in Biotechnology program in the fall of 2020.

Balancing work and her studies proved challenging, but the Roux made it all manageable: “All the classes worked with my schedule. The Roux offers a flexible hybrid model that is easy to integrate into a busy lifestyle,” she says.

To fulfill her program’s experiential learning requirement, Watts completed an industry project at Abbott. She gained invaluable experience in validating equipment and in project management. “At work, I got to immediately apply what I’d learned in school, which made it easier to understand what otherwise would be abstract concepts,” she explains.

After just one-and-a-half years at the Roux, Abbott promoted Watts to product transfer scientist, where she now manages experiment execution, facilitates process improvements for on-market products, and analyzes tracking and trending data for investigation. “I didn’t know I’d move into this role so quickly,” she says. She knows her Roux education will advance her career. “My knowledge will help me continue to grow within the company. This degree will open up more opportunities.”
